When beloved University of Alabama football coach Gene Stallings's son was born with Down syndrome and a serious heart defect, doctors predicted he wouldn't live to see his first birthday and urged Coach Stallings and his wife to institutionalize him. But for Gene and Ruth Ann that was not an option. Johnny quickly won the hearts and adoration of the Stallings family and everyone who took the time to know him, and, proving the doctors wrong by leading an active life, he became a vital and important part of his family, his community, and his father's career. With intimate glimpses of family life and thrilling football anecdotes, ANOTHER SEASON is brimming with poignant lessons about defying the odds and finding joy in every moment.

  • This book is a fairly typical first person account of raising a child with a disability, but I would recommend it because of the historical perspective. The authors recount Johnny's early days as a child with Down Syndrome in the 60's, before PL 94-142 was passed enabling him to attend school. It alludes to some of the stumbling blocks in terms of acceptance of kids with disabilities in the public schools, and is useful for helping us to realize how far we have come in terms of this.

It is also a testimonial to how well a person can do in spite of the lack of early education, when he has family that includes him and doesn't shelter or hide him. It further illustrates the father's and family's evolution in their own acceptance and ultimate true appreciation and devotion to Johnny as the person that he is (was).

  • Great book!

  • As the father of two young children with Down Syndrome, I was amazed at what Coach and Mrs. Stallings had to endure while raising a Down Syndrome child in the early 60's. They were truly trailblazers. John Mark's accomplishments encourage me as I watch my kids grow and advance knowing that their starting point was so much farther along than Johnny's situation. No, it's not high literature but Another Season is the kind of story every parent of Down Syndrome children should read. Your kids will be OK and will contribute mightily to this world.

  • If you are undecided about whether or not to purchase this book, the answer is, "Yes, you should!"

For anyone who has ever faced a difficult time in their life, anyone who has ever known someone going through a difficult time, anyone who ever wondered how you were going to make it through a truly life-changing experience, and so many others!

P.S. Not our first reading of the book, of course, but while looking for books to purchase for friends, realized that ordering through Amazon was the only way to get hard back copies for my Mom. The local bookstore could only order the paperback version.

  • A great story of a Coach's personal life with his challenged son. I can relate to this book in many ways. This will touch your heart.

  • My favorite book.

  • A great story, one which shows a Coach who cares as much about winning in life as on the field! He turned his son into a winner and used his story and his celebrity status to help other children born with birth defects. This book should be read by all expecting parents, and without a doubt should be read by parents facing the same situation!

  • The book is awesome and inspiring! What a testament to a fathers love for his incredible son. I would highly recommend this to anyone, young or old! I have a 48 year old Down Syndrome brother. He and my dad have the same wonderful relationship as John Mark and Coach Stallings did. I felt like I was reading my own family's story. These young men changed the lives of all of those around them.
