The whale is the largest, loudest, oldest animal ever to have existed. It is improbable, amazing, and—as anyone who has seen an underwater documentary or visited the display at the American Museum of Natural Historycan attest—a powerful source of wonder and delight to millions. The Whale is an extraordinary journey into the world of this fascinating and mysterious animal.Acclaimed writer Philip Hoare visits the historic whale-hunting towns of New Bedford and Nantucket, wanders the streets of London and Liverpool in searchof Melville's whaling inspiration, and swims with sperm whales in the middle of the Atlantic. Through the course of his journey he explores the troubled history of man and whale; traces the whale's cultural history from Jonah to Moby-Dick, Pinocchio to Free Willy; and seeks to discover why these strange and beautifulanimals continue to exert such a powerful grip on our imagination.A blend of the travel and nature writing in the tradition of Jonathan Raban and John McPhee, The Whale is a gripping voyage into the heart of Hoare's obsession—and ours.

  • I've read this several times. It's one of the best of the author's books in recent years, and it's like romantic suspense comfort food. You know in advance that all obstacles will be overcome, the heroine will be strong, the hero likewise, and there will be a happy-ever-after, complete with some witty dialogue and sizzling sex along the way. In some ways, the author is a careless writer. She telegraphs a lot of the plot, and an intelligent reader can tell what's going to happen and when. But it's a fun read - well, if you don't mind a couple of serial killers with their warped agendas.

Fiona Bristow trains dogs, including Search and Rescue, and she's part of an S&R team. She lives on a remote island off the coast of Washington, and has loyal and devoted friends and family (I'm including her three dogs as part of that family). Simon Doyle has recently moved to the island and his mother has foisted an untrained puppy upon him. Naturally, he brings Jaws, as the voracious pup is named, to Fiona for training. Simon is one of those rough heroes. No tender words, a surly expression, a cranky attitude, and an unwillingness to fall for Fiona, even as he falls hard and fast.

Along comes a serial killer, and the rest is the usual storyline. Since I've read this several times, I've long lost interest in that part of the book and skim it to get back to the banter and developing relationship between Fiona and Simon. This is a very enjoyable book, and if you haven't encountered the author before, I do recommend it.

  • How did I miss this book when it was published? I'm not sure, but I'm sorry I did. The story is very good, the pace is steady but exciting, the background story about Search and Rescue dogs was fascinating - all good elements, but for me the dialogue between the characters tipped the scale over into "Outstanding!". A previous reviewer who thought the male lead character was "terrible" missed the point, missed the personalities, missed the mark on evaluation it all. The characters were complex and their interaction was terrific. I have rarely (if ever) read better dialogue between characters. Even the background characters and stories were excellent. There is no need for me to go through the plot (others have done a great job of that); but take my word, if you REALLY like stories about people more than stories about plots, this is the book for you. (The excellent plot is just "frosting on the cake"). Read it.

  • One of my absolute favorite books. I’ve actually read it several times. The search and rescue component was interesting and original. I’m an animal lover, so I loved reading about the dogs - especially Jaws. Fiona is a wonderful character, and well developed. Although she survived something traumatic, she has worked hard to build her own corner of normal. She has friends and family (Sylvia is a hoot!) that genuinely respect and care for her, and she is a wonderful blend of quirky and responsible. The thriller portion was just the right level of creepy, and I absolutely loved the ending.

  • I love Nora Roberts. I love her characters and her storylines. In the book, I was enthralled with the work of Search and Rescue teams. Learned alot about what they do, how they are trained, and the heart and soul of the trainers. Do so recommend this book if you are a Nora Roberts fan.

  • I give this book a 5 star because, as always, Nora adds all the elements of a great story into every book she writes. This story will pull you in and make you feel like you're part of the story. It has sadness, humor, romance, fun, fear, and hope all rolled into one great story. As with all Nora's books, I read them a second and sometimes third time over the years before I pass them on.

  • I loved this book. It just flows effortlessly with brilliantly rounded characters and an incredible plot. Fiona barely escaped a serial killer and then had to piece her life back together with the help of her new passion; dog training and dog search and rescue. Add a sexy, surly neighbor who is determined not to get involved, but can't seem to help being attracted to the fiercely independent Fiona and you have a steamy romance waiting to happen. Unfortunately, a copycat killer is on the loose and seems determined to hunt down Fiona. I couldn't put this book down! Two thumbs up!!

  • I have been a Nora Roberts fan since I stumbled upon her very first book, Irish Thoroughbred. All of her books have a lot of twists and turns to keep the reader trying to guess what will happen next. All of her books (except for her earlier ones from the 1980's) have some sexual content, but she throws in a lot of suspense to keep the reader hooked.
If you are a collector of her books, then you'll definitely want this book in your collection.

  • This is a story about Search and Resque Dogs, and how they are trained. It starts out right in the first chapter, with a search and resque of a small child. IF you love dogs, you will love this story, Its mostly about 3 S&R dogs. and a pup called Jaws. You will fall in love with Jaws, and the other dogs. This story has dog teams, murder, kidnapping, likeable people, and some not very likeable people. Nora Roberts is a well known writer and a well writtin writer. Her books stand on their own. This one is outstanding. you will love the main characters, and the supporting people, and the training the dogs go thru.. I recommend this book for just about any one, especially Nora Roberts fans. If you are not familiar with her works, this is a great one to learn about her style and if you would to read any more of her books
